Product Description
The OptiFix Pro motorized CD clean/repair kit repairs and cleans all formats of CD/DVD Media. No manual buffing is required, motorized process stops automatically. The kit is enough to provide 50 clean or repair cycles and includes motorized unit with AC adapter, 1 cleaning kit, 1 repair kit and instruction booklet. This was a sale item, and as I had lots of DVDs to restore, I thought a motorized device would do the trick. I was wrong. The feel of this product is very cheap, and the size of it quite large for the measly bit of repair it does. Its larger than an early gen. cd player. Not really very important to its functionality, so lets move on.
The cleaning heads are 2 rotating pieces of plastic with green and white cloth on top, on which you are to pour a drop of cleaning agent before beginning the cycle. you are provided with 2 extra cleaning heads and the cleaning fluid. The heads are placed inside, followed by the dvd or cd you want to clean, laying above them. The device is closed much like a cd player. Plug the device's bulky power adapter in and press the button, and wait. Its agonizingly loud as it spins the cd and cleaning heads. After a minute or so, you check the disk out. Generally, it takes 3-4 spins before any improvement can really be noticed.
I dont really see the advantage of this product over a mechanical cleaner. The motorized nature of this just makes it bulky and loud, but adds nothing to the cleaning ability of it. I would recommend just buying a less expensive repair device that you spin manually, or going for something more advanced that spins the disk faster or uses a better cleaning mechanism.
This is a so-so cleaner.
As for repairing scratched CDs or DVDs, don't waste your money.
I tried it on 5 different disks with varying levels of scratches.
This thing didn't repair any of them.
I tried this unit on about a dozen mildly scratched DVDs that have not been playing reliably. After repair attempts, not even one of the disks' performance improved. I attempted a single repair, and multiple repairs - made no difference. The instructions had been followed to the letter, and the cleaning/repair disks were kept clean at all times. Complete waste of money.
I bought the memorex cd/dvd cleaner- after I bought it I saw some bad reviews. If you use it like it says -I worked great. My 5 yr old daughter ruined 3 dvd, One the Wizard of Oz. I used the fixer and then the cleaner (household medical alchol also cleans well)as discribed. I fixed, then cleaned the DVDS. then repeated the steps one more time. Clean the DVDs and there will be no film residue. DVD were as good as new
Tried the cleaning for a one month period and none of my CD's or DVD's came any cleaner. I would not recommend this product.
Does nothing. leaves smudges to be removed with a cloth on cleaning. so it doesn't remove scratches and it does a half asked cleaning job. This thing makes a tee shirt and tooth paste look like break through technology.
Normally I check reviews before buying any electronic. But we are going on the road tomorrow and I wanted to fix the kids DVDs before then. I go to Target and get this for $20.
Absolute waste of money! The DVDs have gone from playing but pausing/freezing from scratches, to not playing at all. Since I foolishly trusted this product to be worthwhile, three DVDs are toast now, thanks Memorex!
You can bet two things:
A. I'm not buying any electronic without looking it up first.
B. Memorex is going to get a steady stream of complaints.
Don't waste your money, this thing is useless.
I bought this product for $20. Tried to repair a couple of CD's with it, but this device created more circular scratches on the disc.
Please dont ever buy this item.
I only give this one star because there is nothing lower. This did nothing but put a dent in my wallet. Does not work AT ALL!
First, why have a personal DVD repair system? For me it was when we're watching a movie and it starts pausing and skipping, and I have a better alternative than to just give up trying to watch it after cleaning it with windex doesn't work. If the Optifix doesn't work, at least I had a better way to try to get the movie going again.
I believe their is no such thing as a perfect DVD repair system. However, some DVDs are borderline dirty/scratched that a good cleaning and a turn through the "fixing" mode should bring SOME of those DVDs back from the brink.
With that in mind, Optifix works, though not perfectly. I have three young children that can be rough on DVDs (especially the children DVDs). Using Optifix to first clean, then attempt a repair, and then clean again, I have about a 60% success rate of returning DVDs to playable status. That's the good news, and by itself should rate a four star review.
The reason that its three stars is that the pads need replaced frequently. They get worn out fast, especially when unused for days or weeks, and can start to scratch the DVDs themselves if not replaced often. Twenty uses is about the maximum. So if I "save" 12 out of twenty disks, it probably saves me $120 - 240 in having to buy a new disk to replace the old one. Heck, even "saving" one or two disks per kit that you like well enough to rebuy is worth the $8.00 or so for that kit.
My only response to the "it scratched my DVD even more" one-stars is this: First, the disk wasn't working already if you were trying to repair it. Second, replace the pads more often, especially if you haven't used the device in a while.
