Product Description
The Xbox Advanced AV Pack connects the Xbox console to S-video and digital audio input. It is for use exclusively with the Xbox video game system from microsoft.Use the Xbox Advanced AV Pack to connect the Xbox console to TV S-Video inputs, AV inputs, and digital or surround sound audio receiver, enabling higher quality images and sound during gameplay and DVD movie viewing. This is a must with today's new flat panel TVs. The old cable that came with the XBox made the picture all fuzzy. This new adapter provides a crystal clear picture.
I bought this primarly for the optical audio output. I've set up the XBMC for digital output, now I can stream dolby digital and DTS. No longer need my DVD player. Sound is great compared the the rca output, specially when using DTS. The bonus part is the s-video, although there is not much improvement over rca video cable, the image seams to have more contrast and sharper.
I bought the spherex 5.1 surround for the x box and i found out that you will have to have somekind of an adapter in order for you to connect your x box to the receiver. At first i look around in trhe web . I bumped into "monster cables" but they are too expensive. So i thought, i have no choice but to get it. It would cost me another $ 80 or more. Then i saw this advance av pack. At first i'm not sure if it actually does have an optical out. So i went to my local gamecrazy store and checked it out. It does have an optical out. But you couldn't actually see it in the pictures. So i bought it. And it's totally worth it, for under 20 bucks. It's a bargain. Don't get the monster cables it's too pricy. Get this one instead.
The only problem I had with this product is that because my reciever only has one optical input and one coaxial input it meant robbing my dedicated dvd player of it's precious optical input. The xbox sounded very good playing games, but suddenly movies lost their impact. So unfortunatly I disconnected the xbox's optical output and reconnected it to the dvd player since it plays movies much clearer. The xbox is now connected via standered stereo plugs, on my reciever I merly put the xbox on dolby pro logic and the surround experiance was still very good. For a short while though the sound was very good,if you have a spare optical output this is the goods of xbox. And if some of you are wondering why I didn't get the high definition pack it's because my flat screen tv only has one component video reserved for the dvd player.
If you want a digital audio conection with or without the S-video hookup, this is the product to purchase. Don't worry about the monster cable connections. It really won't provide you with the sound quality that the offical X-box digital AV pack audio connection would provide. With the Advance AV pack, the optical or coax cable can plug directly into the connector without the purchase of any other equipment. It's nice and it's not expensive.
The Advanced AV Pack offers a audio and video upgrade over the standard pack that comes with the XBox system. The standard pack has composite (RCA) video output and standard audio output (also uses RCA cable.)
The Advanced AV pack allows Dolby Digital sound (you will need a separate optical cable and a Dolby Digital receiver with an optical input), and offers a s-video output for better picture (if your TV has s-video inputs.)
Both are dramatic improvements over the standard pack (if you have the matching TV and stereo equipment.) If you only have 1 of the 2 available, it is still worth the price- the picure and sound difference are both significant.
Much like the same thing in the above review "Not 'Monster', but does the job"... I got duped into paying for the two Monster Cable pieces required, only to come home and for the life of me, not be able to get my Yamaha receiver to pick up the Dolby Digital sound....
This piece (plus the Toslink cable) fired up the 5.1 right away and the sound difference is absolutely stunning!!! Halo, already being the best game i have ever played, is all that much better now!!!
Now if i could just find the DVD Remote to try out that part of it :-)
For those of you that don't know (and as I've recently discovered there are a few of you), there are a few ways of improving the already exceptional performance of the X-Box. The best bang for your buck is the advance AV pack which allows you to upgrade from those yellow, red, and white AV cables, which are standard for almost all home entertainment equipment, to S-video and dolby digital.
I was originally planning to order the monster component video cables which are far more expensive, but offer the very best in performance. Eventually I decided to go with S-video instead because my 36" Sony Wega has s-video hookups in the front, as does my second TV, and the televisions of all my friends whose houses I sometimes take my box. When I saw this product on the shelf for half the price of the monster hook-ups, I bought it impulsively and I'm very pleased with the results.
For those with very high-end equipment, HDTV, or those willing to shell out a little extra dough, there's no substitute for Monster. For the rest of us, this little set-up does the job quite nicely. I've got a decent system: 36" Sony Wega, Onkyo receiver and Polk speakers, and it feels like I'm finally getting all my money out of my Xbox.
After playing these game for two months with the standard cables, the difference is stunning. The Dolby Digital sound is immersive and incredible. There's just no comparison. The superior video actually makes some games easier to play. S-Video improves the depth, clarity and color, allowing you to see distant objects clearly, which is important when playing Halo or Gotham Racer. You can see creatures clearly or the outlines of an impending turn allowing you better reaction time. A surprising benefit, but a welcome one.
While I'm satisfied with this inexpensive little product, there's a few things you should know: if you want dolby digital sound, you'll need to buy an optical cable seperately. If you can afford HDTV, you can definitely afford Monster component cables, so do yourself a favor and buy them. If you're new to things like S-video and aren't sure what they are, make sure your TV has at least one S-video inlet. If you have a mid-range TV built in the last 4 years, you probably do, but know what your TV can do before you buy any of the available wires.
Along with a optical cable, the av unit will greatly enhance your XBOX experience. You won't believe the difference it makes!!!
I recently purchased the Xbox Advance AV pack. I have never heard a game in true 5.1 digital sound and wow its totally incredible. The only down side is that they make you buy a fiber optic cable, instead of giving you the choice of the digital coaxial which is relatively less expensive. I am also a little worried about losing sound quality running into in to the pack from my reciever. I'm not quite sure if I am losing quality in my sound or not. However if you have a dolby digital reciever or a tv with s-video it will make you feel like your in the game. One thing I did like though was the fact that they included the s-video cable.
